Stockholm has, by far, the coolest story of the trip. First, though, it must be said, that Stockholm is an odd city. It’s big, but somehow, it didn’t really feel that big. That said, it was very cool to wander around.
This building is where they give out the Nobel prizes. I wandered over there one day, but didn’t take the tour inside. It was cool to sit out by the water, though.
I took a bus tour around Stockholm because I couldn’t find a walking tour. I wasn’t particularly impressed.
Fun fact: the current line of Swedish monarchy is actually French. In the 1800s one of the Swedish Kings made a French military man his heir because all of his children had died young
This is an older style house in Stockholm.
So… the coolest story from the trip. After the bus tour, I went wandering around a bit. I find this big screen made of ice (see the picture below). I wander around a bit more and discover that I’ve arrived in time for the beginning of the Stockholm Film Festival. It’s sponsored by the ice hotel, hence the screen of ice, and a few other people. I wandered around a bit.
All of a sudden, I see a small piece of printer paper taped on a sign. It’s mostly Swedish, but there are three things I can make out on the sheet: “Susan Sarandon” “17:30″ and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” I decided this was interesting enough to stick around. I take a seat, get some free coffee and free chocolate from sponsors of the film festival, and wonder if my sweatshirt, vest, and light gloves are going to be enough with how much the temperature seems to be dropping. 5:00 or so rolls around and someone comes out to set up a podium and roll out a red carpet. I’ve seen the short introduction to the festival clip about twenty times. 5:30 arrives and a little bit later, Susan Sarandon walks out. Yes, that’s her in the blurry picture below. I couldn’t get a good picture because of the low light.
She accepts a Lifetime Achievement Award and introduces The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is then shown on the screen of ice. It was a bit chilly (I couldn’t feel my feet by the time it finished), but it was an interesting experience. I didn’t see any costumes. It was a bit cold for that, I think. After the movie, I went back to the hostel, then went out with some people who were staying there. The next day, I went wandering around and took more pictures of the city.
The white boat in the picture below is actually a hostel. It was, unfortunately, filled when I tried to book my lodging.
